Joining the NDIS
The National Disability Insurance Scheme
The National Disability Insurance Scheme or NDIS supports disabled people by making sure you get the disability support and services you need.

What is the NDIS? According to young people
In this 4 minute video disabled young people talk about what the NDIS is.
The NDIS supports disabled people to:
- Learn new skills
- Be independent so that you can do things by yourself or with less help
- Get information about the services in your area
- Access services like sports clubs and art groups
Through the NDIS you can get the supports that you need because of your disability. The NDIS will pay for these supports.
Who can join the NDIS?
To join the NDIS the law says you must:
- Be under 65 years old
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- Have a permanent disability that affects how you do some things like:
- Get from one place to another
- Communicate
- Look after yourself
- Go to school
- Work
You may still be able to join the NDIS if you do not meet the above. Call the NDIS team on 1800 800 110 to ask.
People who do not get a NDIS plan can still get help to access other services that are not part of the NDIS.

How young people use the NDIS
Everyone is different so everyone gets different support.
