Getting NDIS support

What support can you get from NDIS?

The NDIS will only pay for support that is fair and that you really need.

Example: The NDIS will pay for you to get a wheelchair if you need one, but they will not pay for you to get a wheelchair that is made of gold.

Everyone is different so everyone gets different support.

The supports and services in your plan could help you to:

  • Go to school
  • Get a job
  • Be part of social groups, like sports teams and book clubs
  • Be independent
  • Live on your own
  • Be healthy

What is an NDIS plan?

When you join the NDIS you will have a planning meeting with a planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC). They work with you to decide what support you will get through the NDIS.

The information you share will help them know what supports you need to live the life you want. They will use the information you give them during your planning meeting to create an NDIS plan.

An NDIS plan is a document that has information about you. It lists your goals and the supports you will get through the NDIS to achieve your goals.

Goals are things you want to happen. For example:

  • Get a job
  • Use public transport
  • Make friends

What is included in an NDIS plan

Your NDIS plan includes information about how much money you get for disability supports and services through the NDIS.

This money will be used to help you achieve your goals.

The NDIS pays for the supports that you need because of your disability.

What happens at a planning meeting?

In this 6 minute video disabled young people talk about what happens during a NDIS planning meeting.

What you talk about

At a planning meeting you talk about:

  • Your life
  • How your disability affects you
  • Support you need because of your disability
  • Your goals and what you want to do in the future
  • How the NDIS can help you to live the life you want

Speaking up at your planning meeting will help your planner or LAC learn about your life and your goals.

You can save your answers to questions in this program and take them to your planning meeting. They will help the person creating your NDIS plan understand what you want and what support you need.

Who can come to your planning meeting?

You can bring anyone you want to your planning meeting, including:

  • Family
  • Partner
  • Friends
  • An advocate

Where can you have your planning meeting?

You can choose where you have your planning meeting. You can have it in person or via video or phone.

How often do you have a planning meeting?

Your goals and the support you need to achieve them will change over time. That means that your NDIS plan needs to change to so that you get the right support.

Your NDIS plan will last for 1 year. You will then have a planning meeting to create a new plan. You can add new goals and get support to achieve those goals.

You can talk about what worked well in your NDIS plan and what needs to be changed.

If you think your goals and the support you need will not change every year then you can ask for your plan to last up to 3 years.
