Documentaries can be a fun way of learning about different topics. You can watch them by yourself or with family and friends using apps like Netflix Party.

We have made a list of our favourite disability-related documentaries!

Crip Camp (2019)

Crip Camp is about the disability rights movement in America. A group of young disabled people went to summer camp for a few years. The camp was a place where they could be themselves and could ask for the support they needed.

They worked together to change the law in America so that schools and other buildings had to be made accessible so that wheelchair users and other disabled people could get in.

You can watch it on Netflix.

Vision Portraits (2019)

Vision Portraits is a documentary made by Rodney Evans when he found out he was losing his sight. He interviewed other blind or vision impaired artists about their art.

You can watch it on AppleTV.

Rising Phoenix (2020)

Rising Phoenix is a documentary about the Paralympics. The Paralympics are a sporting event for disabled athletes from different countries to compete against each other for medals. They happen every 4 years after the Olympic Games.

In the documentary, different disabled athletes share their story of why they love their sport and what the Paralympics means to them.

You can watch it on Netflix.

Perspective shift (2020)

This is a three-part series about disabled artists.

For example, Prue Stevenson is an autistic artist. Her art has helped her understand her autism. She speaks up for herself and other autistic people. Autistic pride is important to her.

You can watch the three episodes on SBS for free until October 30.

Simply Complicated (2017)

Demi Lovato is a singer and actress. Simply Complicated is a documentary about her experiences with bipolar disorder and an eating disorder.

YDAS

The Youth Disability Advocacy Service (YDAS) is an advocacy organisation that works with disabled young people aged 12 to 25.

We work with disabled young people in Victoria to make sure you can speak up and are being treated fairly. You can access our free advocacy service if you need advice or support.

We run programs so that you can learn to speak up for yourself and others. We talk with disabled young people about what matters most to you. We then help the government and other organisations understand those issues so they can treat disabled young people fairly.

YDAS is a core agency of Youth Affairs Council Victoria (YACVic). YDAS was established in 2006 and is funded by the Victorian Government.
