A few months ago, we posted about Young Adult novels that have disabled characters. Now we are sharing 5 books written by disabled authors.

Cursed by Karol Ruth Silverstein

Fourteen-year-old Erica (Ricky) has arthritis. At the start of the book, Ricky’s doctors talked to her parents instead of her. Ricky was angry and swore a lot.

Ricky learned how to live with her diagnosis and speak up for herself. Cursed is an #OwnVoices novel. The author also became sick as a teenager.

The Silence Between Us by Alison Gervais

Alison Gervais is part of the Deaf community, and the cover designer is also part of the Deaf community!

Maya was Deaf. She had to attend a school with hearing students for the first time. Maya stood up for herself and taught people around her about her deafness.

It’s Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vissini

This novel was made into a film starring Emma Roberts.

Craig was a high school student. He felt stressed and experienced anxiety and depression.

Craig used art as a way of coping with his feelings and saw a counsellor. He learned that it was important to take care of himself.

The State of Grace by Rachel Lucas

Rachel Lucas and her daughter are on the autism spectrum, just like the main character of the novel (Grace).

Grace doesn’t like loud sounds or bright lights. She needs extra recovery time after social interactions.

The way people treated her and her autism made her life hard sometimes. The problem was not her autism.

Jerk, California by Jonathan Fraisen

Jonathan Fraisen has Tourette’s Syndrome, just like the main character, Sam.

Reading about Sam’s life may make you feel less alone.

YDAS

The Youth Disability Advocacy Service (YDAS) is an advocacy organisation that works with disabled young people aged 12 to 25.

We work with disabled young people in Victoria to make sure you can speak up and are being treated fairly. You can access our free advocacy service if you need advice or support.

We run programs so that you can learn to speak up for yourself and others. We talk with disabled young people about what matters most to you. We then help the government and other organisations understand those issues so they can treat disabled young people fairly.

YDAS is a core agency of Youth Affairs Council Victoria (YACVic). YDAS was established in 2006 and is funded by the Victorian Government.
